Thomas Carlyle Ford founded his eponymous company in 2005. Though Tom Ford is known internationally for his design and fragrance work, he also had a foray in the film industry in 2009 with his film A Single Man, which was met with good reception by fans and critics. The fashion industry was not always his primary interest, as he studied at Parsons School of Design with a focus in architecture; however, during an internship abroad, Ford recognized his passion for the industry and began to pursue it with great success. He first landed positions with Cathy Hardwick and then Perry Ellis before directing his career launching marketing campaign for Yves Saint Laurent after it was acquired by Gucci.
