Upon graduation, he decided to pursue a fashion career, working for Cathy Hardwick and Perry Ellis before moving to Milan, Italy to work for Gucci, where he ultimately served as creative director for Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, which Gucci acquired in 1999.
